Woolly Holmes

Chief Investigative Reporter & Founder of The Wiltshire Wink
Column: The Woolly Investigation
Species: Suffolk Sheep (with unusually curly wool and a suspicious mind)

“If you’ve seen something peculiar — and you probably have — scribble it down and press the Mole network below. I can’t solve what I don’t know. Well, I can, but it’s less fun.”

"The sheep never lie—they just occasionally withhold the truth."*

About Woolly
Woolly Holmes, born Woolington Holmes of Pewsey Vale Farm, is the rumpled fleece behind the most outrageous scoops in village history. Whether it’s a rogue scone scandal, a duck pond cover-up, or suspicious wheelbarrow activity after midnight, Woolly is on the case. He believes every mundane event is probably part of a vast, well-hidden conspiracy—and, worryingly often, he’s right.

Background
Woolly comes from a long line of weather-forecasting sheep, but chose a different path after solving the childhood mystery of who was stealing Farmer Giles’ carrots (it was the farmer’s wife, supplementing the family stew). Since then, he’s trained himself in the noble arts of journalism, tea consumption, and wall-staring deduction. He founded The Wiltshire Wink with two goals: expose the truth, and finally get to the bottom of what exactly happens in the village hall after 10 PM.

Intensely curious, often overly so

Slightly paranoid but methodical

Treats every case like it's a matter of national security

Only trusts three people, and one of them is Bartholomew Badger

Liberal use of quotation marks around "suspicious" terms

Weather observations irrelevant to the plot

Detailed descriptions of attire (including his own detective scarf)

Frequent references to "the duck pond situation"

"WHAT THEY'RE NOT TELLING YOU" (usually about jam)

"SUSPICIOUS SIGHTINGS"

"THE RED STRING FILES" — conspiracy theories, but charming

"The fleece remembers."

"Don't trust a quiet milk float."

"I've connected the dots. It’s a rectangle now."

Visual Style

Red string diagrams and scribbled maps

Eyewitness quotes in dramatic boxes

Shadowy sheep silhouette as logo

Relationships

Founding trio with Henrietta Henforth and Bartholomew Badger

Friendly rivalry with Fiona Foxington (he believes her sources are imaginary; she believes his trench coat is)

Works closely with the Mole Network (especially "Burrow Deep")

Fun Fact
He once accused the postmistress of running a secret jam cartel. She now sends him muffins every Friday. Neither of them have admitted wrongdoing.

Read Woolly's column in every issue of The Wiltshire Wink, but be warned: once you enter the fleece, the fleece enters you.
